The Late Neolithic Colonization of the Eastern Badia, by Professor Gary Rollefson, Professor of Anthropology, Whitman College, ACOR/CAORC Senior Fellow
The lecture will be held on Tuesday 25 February 2014 at 6:00 pm, in ACOR Center, Amman, Jordan
About the Lecture:
Unprecedented population growth, environmental degradation, and a reduction of rainfall by the end of the Pre-Pottery Neolithic B (PPNB) period (c. 8,700-7,000 BC) resulted in severe pressures on farming communities in highland Jordan and other parts of the Near East. One consequence of these developments was a concerted move into the eastern badia region by pastoral groups to take advantage of the pasturage for their sheep and goats, converting vegetation useless for humans into meat, dairy products, wool and hair, and skins. Long considered to be a slow and somewhat timid process of adapting to the arid regions, recent research in the Wadi al-Qattafi and Wisad Pools east of Azraq now indicates that the shift into the badia by shepherds was robust and widespread, establishing semi-permanent villages that were occupied for several months of the year, sometimes practicing occasional agriculture when seasonal rains permitted, as early as 6,500 BC.
About the Lecturer:
Dr. Gary Rollefson is Professor of Anthropology at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. He has worked in the field of archaeology in Jordan for more than thirty years. He specializes in Near Eastern prehistoric archeology and prehistoric religions in Jordan and Saudi Arabia. He is well known for his work, together with Jordanian archaeologist Zeidan Kafafi, at the site of 'Ain Ghazal and the discovery there of ancient plaster statues.
Rollefson first came to Jordan on an ACOR fellowship in 1978. He lectures and publishes extensively. Rollefson studied Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley, BA (1965), and at the University of Arizona, MA (1972), and Ph.D. (1978). | 2/22/2014 | 2/25/2014 | | Public Lecture Announcement 25-February 2014 | Public Lecture Announcement 25-February 2014 |

DIES ProGRANT Proposal Writing for Research Grants
Practical-oriented Training for New Researchers in Jordan
March 8th–12th 2015 — E-Learning — September 6th–10th 2015
On behalf of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) the DIES ProGRANT Co-ordination Centre at the University of Cologne, together with the DAAD Information Centre Amman and an additional local partner are organizing the training course:
“ProGRANT Proposal Writing for Research Grants: Practical-oriented Trainings for New Researchers”
The course is part of the DIES (Dialogue on Innovative Higher Education Strategies) programme of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK).
The aim of DIES ProGRANT is to train researchers and young PhD holders in developing a promising research proposal for national or international research funding (every participant will have the opportunity to tailor their application to the funding institution of their choice). Researchers from all disciplines can apply for this course. Each group will consist of 30 participants from the region.
Because of its multicultural nature, DIES ProGRANT is also an effective tool for promoting international research and relationships
Seminar I (March 8th–12th 2015, Amman, Jordan)
Seminar I will provide basic knowledge and basic technical skills that are needed to design, write and budget a potentially successful grant (e.g. to transform an abstract research idea into a proposal) on the basis of lectures, group work and exercises. Attendance and active participation from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm is required.
Seminar II (September 6th–10th 2015, Amman, Jordan)
During the second seminar, the grant drafts will be presented, discussed, evaluated and fine-tuned in a participative review process. The objective of this seminar is to engage in a collaborative feedback process between trainers and participants and ultimately develop a final draft. At the end of Seminar II, the research funding proposals should be ready for submission to research funding organizations. Attendance and active participation from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm is required.

Online Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) online detection of living cancer cells and micro magnetic imaging resonance
Abstract: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is a powerful analytical technique with a wide range of application field, and the NMR spectroscopy is a very information-rich and reliable analytical method which gives comprehensive chemical information about the composition of unknown materials. Typical NMR analyses are carried out in 5 and 3 mm sample tubes with approximately (700, 200) μL sample, Measuring small and ultra-smaller samples volumes are not possible due to the limit of detection (LOD).
A Microstrip NMR detector was designed to enable investigations of volume-limited samples in the low nanoliter range. Therefore NMR spectra of sample quantities in the 100 pmol range can be obtained with this microprobe in a few seconds. Moreover, the planar geometry of the detector is suitable to the size and geometry requirements such different kind of microfluidic cellular sample holders.
Since NMR is a nondestructive technique and high speciation performance, it is one of the major technologies for metabolic profiling, hence allows in vivo measurements of biological cells.
In the ongoing research, we focus on metabolic analysis of living human cancer cells; the obtained data about the concentrations and production \ degradation rates of the metabolites give direct evidence of the present status of the cell, which assist us to understand biochemical pathways. A cellular microfluidic NMR sample holder was designed with temperature and proper gas atmosphere controlled environment in order to maintain the viability of the biological cells at near physiological conditions for the long-term in vitro studies.
As a near future investigation, cancer living cells samples will be treated with metal based anti-cancer drugs (e.g. platinum based drugs); the metabolomics respond analyses combined with the (1H,195Pt) NMR studies (signals and correlation times) will be employed to understand the molecular mechanism of anticancer drugs action, and to find out the transport mechanism through the cellular membrane, by quantitative calculation of the organic and nonorganic Platinum NMR signal of the treated cells, the pseudo-first-order rate constant for the reaction of anti-cancer drug with water will be defined, which is indeed a very important factor to monitor the efficiency, aging and degradation of metal-based anti-cancer drugs. | 12/22/2014 | 12/24/2014 | | Public Lecture Announcement 22-December 2014 (Online Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) online detection of living cancer cells and micro magnetic imaging resonance ) | Public Lecture Announcement 22-December 2014 (Online Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) online detection of living cancer cells and micro magnetic imaging resonance ) |

Age related macular degeneration: IL-18 as a novel immunotherapy
The lecture will be held on Tuesday 03 September 2015 at 12:00 pm, in HMCSR Center, Amman, Jordan
Abstract: Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in the western world. There are two main types of AMD, the “dry” form characterised by the presence of yellow deposits called drusen, in the macula and the "wet" form characterised by the growth of abnormal blood vessels from the choroid beneath the macula. The majority of people with AMD have the dry form of the disease and lose some form of central vision. Approximately 30% of patients are refractory to current therapies at the onset and over time and the majority of current treatments control the risk factors associated with the disease rather than the disease itself. The inflammatory cytokine IL-18 was discovered to be capable of regulating angiogenesis in the choroid in mice and that treatment with the cytokine could potentially be used as a therapy in patients suffering from late AMD.
My project involved analysis of the effects of IL-18 on the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) in order to determine whether it affects the homeostatic functions of the RPE. Data obtained from the project showed that IL-18 appeared to have no negative effect on the RPE or any impairment in its immune function. The results imply that IL-18 would not have any detrimental effects on the outer blood retinal barrier function of the RPE if it were to be used as a novel therapy for AMD.
