The Translation Center at the University of Jordan(UJ) organized A lecture entitled
"Translation: A Personal Experience", presented by Professor Jihad Hamdan, Linguistics and Translation Professor at the School of Foreign languages at UJ.
While presenting the guest, The Director of the Translation Center at the University, Mrs. Ola Musmar, pointed out the importance of translation by describing it as it is not only about translating abstract words from one language into another, but about making an entire culture comprehensible. She praised the guest's extensive and personal experience in the field of translation and his perseverance in empowering students in this field with scientific knowledge and personal experience.
During the lecture, Professor Hamdan discussed a number of important topics in the translation profession, and the difficulties facing the translators. He stressed that translation is concerned with how to convey the meaning of the text, the strategies used, and the copping mechanism for successfully dealing with the problems facing the translator, which he described as not always possible, pointing out that translation is considered as “a creative work in which the translator works as a creator of a text independent from the original text, where the creator of the original text is left behind".
Hamdan also addressed the concepts of simultaneous and consecutive translation; pointing out the skills that an interpreter must have, and the serious problems that he or she may be exposed to, such as voice distortion and the variant different dialects .
At the end of the lecture, which was attended by a group of faculty members and students at the University, Hamdan answered the audience's questions and inquiries, and Musmar announced that a training course in the field of translation would soon be held by the UJTC, and will be announced through UJ's website, and different social media channels.
