The Geo-Materials Research Project (GMRP) at the University of Jordan represents an international scientific collaboration between the University of Jordan (UJ) and Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), The collaboration is funded by the Flemish Interuniversity Council of Belgium (VLIR) to support the project entitled "Chemical Stabilization of Natural Geomaterials for Construction and Industrial Applications" The total allocated five years research fund is € 280.000. The project has started in 2006 and will end in 2011.
This project aims to:
1. Establishing a materials research center at the University of Jordan which will act as a center of Excellence that will provide the knowledge and experience to the academic and industrial sectors in and outside Jordan.
2. Sponsoring three young researchers in the field of materials science by offering them a financial support during their Ph.D. study.
3. Trying to implement the mineral polymerization technique to stabilize local clay to construct an in-situ water harvesting system at Al-Muaqer Farm Station of the University of Jordan. This pilot project will be as a model to convince other funding organizations and sponsors to contribute in solving the problem of water shortage in Jordan.
