Hamdi Mango Center for Scientific Research held today a scientific and awareness session on breast cancer to mark the Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The session aimed mainly at raising awareness of the public of the importance of early detection of breast cancer and introducing the center’s research activities for the discovery of novel drugs for breast cancer.
The session comprised three components. First, researcher Hiba Zalloum from the HMCSR presented recent results on the discovery of new effective drugs candidates for treatment of breast cancer. Then, Dr. Firas Fararjeh, assistant professor from the school of medicine at the UJ Consultant at Jordan University Hospital discussed the causes, detection, spread and treatment of the breast cancer. He pointed out that 1,263 new cases are recorded annually in Jordan. Despite this large number of cases, the mortality percentage decreased by 44% from before due to the awareness, advancement of screening and treatment if the detection occurred at early stages.
In the third component, Dr. Nada Al-Tamimi from the King Hussein Cancer Center explained the role of the Jordanian National Program for Breast Cancer in educating women throughout the country about the importance of self-examination and regular mammogram tests in hospitals or mobile vehicle provided by the Program for women in rural areas of Jordan. The session was concluded by answering the speakers of all questions raised by the audience.
