The
Water, Energy and Environment Center (WEEC) at the University of Jordan was
established in 1982 where the scope of research and activities had focused on
water related issues with the main goal of solving real problems in water
management, treatments and reuse, groundwater management, irrigation and
hydrological monitoring. Such goal can be achieved
through fundamental and applied thematic research, which is of primary
importance to arid and semi-arid areas such as Jordan, where water resources
are limited and demand is growing. It was designed to be and to act as the research arm
for the water related ministries, departments and authorities. The center had
broaden its function to include the environmental and energy issues due their interdisciplinary
nature and to cope with water-food-energy nexus as the core of sustainable
development. There is also a need for joint water-energy
policies and better understanding of the susceptibility of water to energy and
vice versa. The center concentrate on the following
areas:
1. Water
and Environment
That include research and studies on
the management and protection of the water resources, integrated water
resources management, hydrological monitoring, groundwater, irrigation
management, environmental issues, wastewater treatment and reuse and
environmental impacts. It will also provide services in the area of monitoring,
environmental awareness and environmental engineering design and participate in
the development of environmental legislation, conferences, seminars and
training programs in the areas of water and the environment.
2. Renewable
energy
The research areas in energy include renewable energy such as
solar and wind, energy storage in batteries and others, efficiency of end uses
such as in building and water uses, and energy economics and policies
3. Training
and consultancy
The center provide training in the above areas in form of
regular and tailored training courses. The center also organizes workshop and conferences
at the local, regional and international levels. Consultancy services can be
provided to public and private entities in the above areas.
4. Laboratory
services
The center is equipped with certified water quality
laboratories to carry out chemical and biological analysis for researchers.
These facilities are available to the public and private sectors. The center
has carried out water quality analysis for different hospitals and hotels
