The
Language Center at The University of Jordan is offering “Teaching Arabic for
Speakers of Other Languages” diploma program to UJ students and individuals
and groups from the community at large.
The
program aims at preparing and graduating its students to be highly qualified
professionals knowledgeable in the theories and applications, ins and outs of
the ASOL program.
The
diploma is a one-year program consisting of 8 courses (24 credit hours) in
addition to the on-the-job training component.

Course Description
(1503520) Acquisition of first and second languages
This
course discusses the concept of a second language, differences
and similarities between the first language and second language,
the differences in the acquisition of both first and second languages,
the psychology of teaching first language, common pattern in learning
the second language, main differences in learning both languages,
the development of teaching methods of the second language such as:
oral methods, communicative methods, total response methods,
bilingualism, levels for teaching Arabic as a second language,
teaching Arabic for special purposes and the psychiatric and educational
basics.
(1503521) Methods of teaching Linguistic elements and skills
for speakers of other languages
This
course discusses linguistic proficiency and its association
to communicative and cultural proficiencies and determining
their elements (the four linguistic skills: listening, speaking, reading
and writing) and their sub skills (sounds, vocabulary and phrases),
teaching methodology, grammar and theoretical and applied
teaching methodology for learners of Arabic in the beginner, intermediate
and advanced levels.

This
course discusses the development and importance of the curriculum, the general
(social, psychiatric and philosophical) frameworks to be followed when
planning a curriculum, the elements of the construction and organization
of a curriculum (objectives, content, activities, educational methods,
teaching methods and assessment) and the indicators of the adequacy of the
curriculum in Jordanian schools.

This
course discusses basic concepts in educational assessment and evaluation,
tools of assessment (tests and non-tests), purposes and phases of
assessment, procedures for preparing achievement tests
and non-standardized achievement tests, psychometric features of a
test, basic concepts of a test, basic concepts in statistics, writing
technical reports on students' achievements, achievement tests and the
possibility of employing them in schools.

This
course discusses the importance of information technology
and communications in this field as supportive tools, their concept, purposes,
functions and equipment, their role in teaching Arabic for speakers of
other languages, and in training teachers to produce and design similar
tools and methods of using them.
(1503525) Problems of teaching Arabic for speakers of other languages
This
course discusses the main problems facing teaching Arabic for speakers of
other languages and learning it by the teacher and student alike such as
places of articulation, writing from right to left, different cases of a
letter in Arabic (at the beginning, middle and end locations), parsing,
letters and vowel marks, facing these problems by offering solutions.
(1503526) Modern Arabic in its cultural context
This
course is an entrance to modern Arabic language science,
its characteristics, nature, branches, basics, linguistic characteristics
and features, modern issues in Arabic language, bilingualism and
duality, Arabic in media, cultural context of Arabic and its role in
determining vocabulary, the linguistic structures and methods and their
usages, interaction of cultures, the most pressing problems and modern
issues and the attitudes of the Arabic Islamic Culture on handling
them.
(1503527) Practical training for teaching Arabic for speakers of
other languages
This
course offers observation classes in which students attend courses given
at centers for teaching Arabic for speakers of other languages. Students
can discuss what they have observed in class under the direction of their
supervisor. The course also offers students the chance to apply what they
have learned on foreign students at these centers. Such classes are
discussed to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the educational
process. Students can apply what they have learned in their previous
courses by planning and attending such classes.
